THINK ABOUT
IT: If a judge does a bad job, some exhibitors get placed lower (rooked) and some get placed higher (gift).
If you show under several bad judges, the Law of Probability would say you will sometimes get rooked and sometimes get a gift.
So in the end, don't we get what we deserve - just on a different weekend?
Monday, July 14, 2008: It's hard to believe
- we've had ten shows and only four remaining. We have the points updated through WEC II. Thank
you to everyone for the corrections you have called or written about, please keep it up. ceshs@msn.com. There are some interesting point races at this point - some awards may come down to the wire.
In
our remaining shows, we have a few fledglings. This past weekend, Two Bays Horse Show was a great success
in its second year for Ronna and Jesse Lynch. It is more difficult for individuals to host a show than it is for
a charity, such as 4-H which can solicit donations.
This week, we return to Caroline County 4-H
Park for the Miles River Benefit Show. This is also the second year for this show. They were able to make a substantial
donation to Talbot and Caroline Hospice in 2007, and hope to receive equal support to continue the show and the donations.
Jumps by Jamie will again be providing the jumps for the courses.
Our last show of the year, September 6, will
be a new show for CESHS at Breezy Run Farm. Vicky Meyer has attended several CESHS shows, and put on other shows at
her facility, to help her offer a quality show. This will also be an opportunity for our Medal Riders to begin the qualification
for the 2009 Finals (all other points still go toward 2008). Look for more information soon.
WEC
is amassing quite a LOST & FOUND collection. Check the office when you are at the Two Bays Horse Show this weekend.
We have spurs, a pony martingale, two different grooming totes, a horse bridle, a bag of bits - and who knows what else.
We have been fortunate to have two different photographers at our shows so far this year. Darling Imagery,
photographer Justin Dickerson, has his photos posted at http://darlingimagery.com/Home_Page.html. Photos are available from The Salisbury Horse Show and from Sussex 4-H Horse Show.
Tom Rowe and
family - Hoof Print Images Photography - has posted photos at http://www.hoofprintimages.com/mp_includes/body.asp. Their photos are available for Mayfest at Winterplace, Winaway, WEC I and WEC II. Please support these
vendors so they will continue to see us at the shows.
We have started to post the
2008 point standings. They are now current through WEC II. Check out the HIGH SCORE page and let us know if you like the new format or not - ceshs@msn.com. Please note that if you are not registered, your points will not show in the chart until you complete the registration.
If you think there is an error - points, registration, spelling - let us know so we can make the corrections early.
We have had a few issues with CESHS registrations not making it to Gayle Dunkleman to record them. We encourage you
to pay by check, separate from your show check, to give you a payment record. Gayle is at most shows and can take the
registration, as can Myra Spencer or Kelly Thaw. If not, leave them at the show office with your payment stapled to
the registration form.
We've posted available show programs and entry forms under SHOW PROGRAMS at this site.
Just a reminder with hot shows coming up: When management permits Hunter
or Hunter Seat Equitation riders to ride without jackets, riders must wear traditional, short, or long-sleeved riding shirts
with chokers or ties. Polo shirts and chaps are not permitted except in unjudged warm-up classes. Management or Judge may
eliminate an exhibitor who is inappropriately attired. See Ask The Expert for more details
Do you know that our state Departments of Agriculture offer lots
of information about caring for your horses? To access the Maryland Department of Agriculture website, start at http://www.mda.state.md.us/. Then it's a little tricky, so we'll take you where you need to go by clicking http://www.mda.state.md.us/resource_conservation/technical_assistance/how.php. Once there, you can click on a host of articles - particularly Pasture and Manure Management.
Do you have a contribution to develop/update the site? We
would love to have articles, letters, photos, editorials, news/events, or anything pertaining to horses in our area.
E-mail your content to us at ceshs@msn.com.
Check "Show Programs" for schooling shows in our
area. If you would like to post your information, send it to ceshs@msn.com. Have you checked out FOR SALE lately?
We have more than sales - also wanted and lease - so check it out if you have a horse or tack to sell, or e-mail us if you
are looking for something we can post. Posted there you will find tack, trailers, horses for sale/lease/stud, farms.
Yes, even farms. Send us your equine related item to list for you.
Photos from many CESHS shows,
including the CESHS Medal Finals and Horse Show are available on-line from Hoof Print Images Photography - www.hoofprintimages.com. Please support this vendor so they will continue to attend our CESHS shows. They
have also provided, at no charge to CESHS, a collage of photos from the year which we showed at the banquet.
CESHS
- The Magazine is looking for articles. We have a few, and would like to hear from YOU as well. You can submit
yours to us at ceshs@msn.com and we will post it.
We would also like to add photos to our site - especially
if of interest to all (group photos, banquet awards table, etc) - email them to us at ceshs@msn.com.
CESHS We are well into our 2008 show season, yet there
are a few people showing how have not registered - either the horse for performance points or the rider for equitation points.
If you have not, please get your horse and rider registration forms to Gayle Dunkleman. They are available on the FORMS
page of this site, along with the show evaluation form. We have had a few issues with CESHS registrations not making
it to Gayle Dunkleman to record them. We encourage you to pay by check, separate from your show check, to give you a
payment record. Gayle is at most shows and can take the registration, as can Myra Spencer or Kelly Thaw. If not,
leave them at the show office with your payment stapled to the registration form.
The 2008 Rule Book is now available
on line, and in print. Check out our new CESHS Pre-Children's/Pre-Adult Horse Division, which carries a new High
Score trophy donated by Marianne Roth and Endeavor Farm. It's interesting
how attendance at CESHS shows is cyclical. Thirty years ago, we had 20 shows and the smallest would have 150 entries.
Fifteen years ago, we were below 16 shows and 100 entries would be a great day. Now, we are below 16 shows, but making
upward progress, and 125 is a good attendance. Considering the economy, fuel prices, and the number of 90 degree plus
shows we have had this year, the show attendance has been very good. If you have an idea of how to strengthen our base,
contact your president, Kelly Thaw, or your secretary, Myra Spencer.
Miles River Farm Benefit Horse Show. Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Caroline County 4-H Park, Denton MD. This show benefits Coastal Hospice of
Talbot and Caroline Counties. The schedule and the entry form are available on this site and will be mailed shortly.
The judges are Shirley Fox of West Chester, PA, and Joyce Ainsworth of Street, MD.
One schedule issue in 2007 was
the Miles River classes, which required tack changes for multiple riders to use the same horse/pony. Pam and Jenny have
addressed this by adding a second junior division, so no in-ring changes will be needed. It's nice to see new riders
given an opportunity to participate at a CESHS quality show, and some of those riders from last year are now competing in
our regular divisions. We look forward to the improved format and another great turnout.
Please note:
The Tuesday deadline for Pre-Entries will be firm. If your entry is not received by July 15, you will
need to post-enter at the show.

Saturday, August 2-Foxden Summer Horse Show II.
Our final visit to Foxden this year. For 2008 - all three of her shows will be MHSA rated. Beth
has re-done the pony/sand ring to improve the footing and reduce the dust. The new footing firmed up some from
April to June, and Beth continues to look for ways to improve the grounds. For August, there will be some schedule
changes to help the flow of the show. A couple of CESHS divisions were added in June, but not well attended.
Look for thes again in August - Long Stirrup, CESHS Pre-Childrens/PreAdult Horse. The program will be available
soon. Beth Steele 2898 W. Denney's Rd. Dover, DE. 19904 (302) 270-8348 cell (302) 734-9838
Saturday, August 9. CESHS Medal Finals & Horse Show.
Our final visit to WEC for 2008, but certainly not an unimportant one. Our Medal Finals are always a highlight.
There are also several point races up for grabs as we near the end of our season. The program will be available soon.

WICOMICO EQUESTRIAN
CENTER CORNER We hope you have enjoyed the upgrades to the facility.
We still have some projects on the drawing board, and some which will move forward once the hectic days of summer slow down
a bit. We are looking at two more stalls, more addition to the PA system, and renovations to the older barn
in the parking area. One of our main fall/winter projects will be a renovation of the Sand Ring. We are also
researching the cost and feasibility of permanent rest rooms. Please be assured we are being good stewards of the money
we have raised, but at the same time we are investing in our future.
Regarding the Sand Ring, we have
met with a professional to get an opinion on the material and grading needed to improve this ring. At the same time,
we are considering alterations to the configuration. Obviously, we want the two to go hand-in-hand. If you have
an idea regarding a configuration to better use the area, please email Rand Thaw at storybookfarm@msn.com. Exhibitors, please be assured we are looking into this and will address the wet issue when we know
how to proceed properly and cost-effectively. In the meantime, we've added some materials for trail obstacles and
a new picket gate for the jumps in the Sand Ring.
If you
would like to reserve a stall for the remaining shows, contact Ginny Morris. If you want to keep the stall after
a show, so you don't have to clean it completely, you can pay for the next show in advance. If you are not keeping
the stall, you will need to clean it. The demand for stalls is such that we need all available stalls for each show.
The Parks Department crew completed
work on the area next to the Devon Ring for spectator/exhibitor seating. The clearing is done, the fence installed,
and mulch put down. Please feel free to use this area for your chairs, coolers, etc. We also approved the cost of a wash pad behind the main barn. The plan was for a concrete pad with a
rail and hose bibs. We had to re-locate due to phone lines, so we may just put the posts to tie, and hose bibs, along
the loafing shed south of the barn, and use the blacktop for the "pad." Thank you to Wayne and Myra Spencer
for the guidance they provided for this project.
As always, we will be painting and repairing
jumps. We are also adding a few new jumps to our inventory. We are also looking into some variety in our
decorations for the jumps.
Open Rides are underway - every Tuesday
evening, weather permitting, in the Sand Ring. The last night available will be Tuesday, August 5.
Our next meeting will be Monday, August 11, 7:15 p.m. at Wicomico Equestrian
Center. We welcome your comments or suggestions, as well as you work. Anyone is welcome to attend,
offer your thoughts or labor, and learn a bit more about WEC.
If you need a WEC membership application, you can link from this site's menu bar to WEC's site and fill one
out. With seven CESHS shows at WEC this year, the $10 per show you save will more than pay for your WEC membership.
We have a couple
of new events for 2008. On Saturday, September 27, Western Horseman Association of Maryland will hold a western and
fun show to benefit the American Cancer Society. Look for more details soon. On Saturday, September 20, Storybook
Farm will host an ESSCHSA show. We are glad to expand to this association in our renter base.
We are excited about the events at WEC, and look forward to adding more. If you are interested in renting
WEC, contact Rand Thaw at storybookfarm@msn.com or 410-835-2070.
We hope you notice and enjoy our continuing improvements
and we welcome your suggestions for the facility. Let us know what we have done well and what you would still like
to see - facilities, events, communication, or anything else. E-mail Rand Thaw, chair, at storybookfarm@msn.com.

EDITORIALS and COMMENTARY
This is slightly off topic, but - hey - no one is sending articles or
commentary to us at ceshs@msn.com, so you get what you get. I say "slightly" off topic because is does
share a family value that resonates within CESHS. On March 14, the Diamond State Drive-In, Felton, Delaware, will open
for its 59th and final year. The Drive-In is a part of Americana that is disappearing. We tried it as a family
outing last year. We rushed off in cold weather because we thought it was the last chance to catch a show, but then
found 2008 would be the last season. The idea blossomed when Emily did not know what a Drive-In was. So off we
went - 3 adults and one child ticket - $29.00. It's usually a double feature, so a pretty good value. We caught
a triple feature of good movies. Yes, a long time to sit in the car, but we had a great family evening/night.
We could talk about the movie without offending anyone. We could take along our own snacks, though we had to complete
the experience with a trip (or two) to the snack bar - and unbelievably clean restrooms. The two intermissions gave
us time to stretch. We very much recommend this outing. We'll be back - in the car while it's cool, maybe the
back of the truck when it's warmer. For more information, check them out at www.dsdit.com. The first movies are a bit "kid"
oriented, but check back for other features later. Posted by Rand Thaw.

We took a family outing recently to the Horse Expo in Timonium. If you have been, you know what fun it
can be. If not, you should plan to go next year. It's not an event I would go to every year, but once is a must.
Vendors of every decription - tack, jewelry, barn equipment, horse trailers, colleges.... We got to see a few demonstrations,
including a lesson in training a trick horse. Emily still laughs when she tells people about that one - the clinician
was a little arrogant, and then fell off after jumping a small jump. I mean FELL OFF - right into the ring fence.
Lots of literature, some samples, ran into a few friends. Posted by Rand Thaw.
Stay tuned - Rand is liable to get on a rampage at any time. Other contributors are welcome, too.
